Our Weekly Pulls, 8/24

After the lull that was last week, it seems that comics that are back in season. We’ve got Dark Horse’s war on multi issue stories with a new DHP, Greg Rucka’s new take on Frank Castle’s war on crime with Punisher #2, and a John Laymans taking a break from his personal war on scorpions to write about the war on poultry with Chew #20. (If that last one doesn’t make sense to you look up the hashtag #Laymanvsscorpions on Twitter, the guy has some issues.)

Also the subtitle of Doomsday isn’t just a footnote, but the grand finally of Acton Comics with it’s final issue before the reboot of the entire DCU in two weeks. And I think that Obi-Wan said exactly how I feel about it with “It’s as if millions of fanboy voices suddenly cried out in terror and were suddenly silenced as five years of continuity were erased.” Because this is, what the fourth or fifth reboot for the DCU now? ( I mean one reboot was to fix the previous mistakes of a reboot that happened to fix a reboot that didn’t go well right?) It’s all very confusing for me.

On the front of independents, if you hate super villains, then you should read the Intrepids to watch super-spies destroy everything super villains love. And on that note, Mark Millar has taken a break from rolling around his giant bank filled with money from licensing his properties like some sort of foul mouthed Uncle Scrooge to grace us with his writing in Kick Ass 2 #3. It would be really nice if he could finish up some of his projects like War Heroes at some point in the future, I’m sure he can find time between casting Wanted 2 and writing the script for War Heroes… waitagoddammedminute he’s finishing the script for the movie based on a comic he hasn’t even finished…

Andy’s Pulls: Chew #20, Dark Horse Presents #3, Incorruptible #21, Intrepids #6, Kick Ass 2 #3, New Mutants #30, Punisher #2, Uncanny X-Force #13

Luke’s Take: This week also brings John Rozum’s exceptional series Xombi to an end with issue #6, an unfortunate casualty of the DCU reboot. And for everyone who remembers the early ’80’s, the heroes in a half-shell are back as Kevin Eastman returns to his seminal creation with IDW’s new iteration of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

Luke’s Pulls: Incorruptible #21, Punisher #2, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #1, Xombi #6

    Coming Up: ATFP Ep. 22

One of Capcom’s most recognizable and memorable characters was a hearty Knight that spent most of his time running around in his underwear. It might not even go too far to say that Arthur has died more times than any other video game character in history. Why? He just happens to be the star of Super Ghouls ‘n Ghosts – arguably the hardest game of the 16-bit generation, and one of the hardest games of all time. Then why the hell do people love it so much?

Come with the ATFP crew as they discover why so many people wax nostalgic over a game that’s built around making you feel bad about yourself. Got questions? Post them to the Ask The Hosts forum, or e-mail the hosts at afterthefact@geekerific.com!
